EDUCATION

Often heralded as the ultimate outdoor classroom and recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a vastly diverse array of wildlife, geology, flora and fauna the Lake District has much to offer in the way of educational resources.

The National Trust Authority administers the popular Blentcathra Centre offering long stay field trips covering both National Curriculum studies and more specialised modules including such subject as sustainable development and environmental art.

As a working example of ecological preservation at its best the Lake District offers both teachers and students the opportunity to discover and study the impact of initially farming, followed by industry and finally tourism upon an area of the countryside that poses some of the most complicated challenges to the modern day preservationist. They can witness first hand both the successes and failures of mankind's attempt at sustaining and nurturing an area that came critically close to being spoiled completely, before matters were taken in hand. Many innovative anti-pollution techniques were developed locally to combat the pollutants released by the heavy mineral mining industry in the area and the results can be plainly witnessed.

Additionally there is no better place in which to study the process of glaciation first hand with such a plain view of the results.
